My work is about the place of identity in human interpersonal relationships as well as human-animal, and human-object relations. My own identity is a pivotal factor. Born in the Ukraine, and raised in Siberia until my ninth year when my family began a year long immigration to the United States, with halts in Poland, Austria, and Italy; staying in refugee settlements along the way. During that time period I learned how to observe and imitate. I am an Immigrant, and view Immigrant culture as being distinct from both its country of origin, and its current location. Now, as an artist, I am interested in the idiosyncrasies that distinguish groups of people; these minute differences are intuitively obvious to the particular culture while remaining completely unobserved by outsiders. I notice a lot of these distinctions in everyday fashion; which reflect not only generational and cultural differences, but also those of utility and environment. Tourist culture is also of interest to me. While on the opposite end of the spectrum from Immigrant culture in class and lifestyle, both share what I call a "migrating aesthetic". In my work I often juxtapose socially and culturally conflicting aesthetics.
